The Downtown Chatham Centre is locally owned and operated. The mall opened in October 1982 and it currently houses over 40 stores & services. The mall is anchored by two national retailers, Sears and Goodlife Fitness. The Downtown Chatham Centre is the only indoor retail mall in the Chatham-Kent area. Services offered are gift cards, mall security officers, lost & found, complimentary wheelchair & electric scooters, children’s car strollers, ATM, postal drop, cafe style eating areas on the main level, the recent addition of an electric vehicle charging station located in the large parking lot behind Retro Suites and free parking in our parking garage (450 stalls) & surface lots (300 stalls).
The Downtown Chatham Centre prides itself as a green shopping centre. In October 2010 the Downtown Chatham Centre was awarded the Waste Minimization Award, from the Recycling Council of Ontario, in recognition of excellence and commitment to a sustainable environment. The Downtown Chatham Centre was awarded with a Communities in Bloom Award in 2010. In May 2013 Downtown Chatham Centre was ground Zero for Chatham’s most aggressive electronic waste fundraising project for Habitat for Humanities; over 150 tons of e-waste was diverted from landfills and won us a Guinness World Record for most e-waste collected in one day. Other green advances in 2013 included the installation of a electric vehicle charging station – the first public charging station offered in Chatham-Kent and switching all the shopping centre’s lighting to energy saving LED bulbs.
The Downtown Chatham Centre is very involved in the local community and there are always various community events, entertainment and activities taking place at mall. Various children’s activities & entertainment have visited Downtown Chatham Centre , such as the well known Children’s show Thomas the Tank Engine Binoo, and are usually offered free of charge. The Downtown Chatham Centre has been the home to the Chatham Mall Walkers for the last 25 years.
